Die Ankunft (Arrival!)

What a busy day! Upon arrival in Munich at the Munich central train station, the tour was scheduled to start in just a couple of hours.  The train ride from Regensburg to Munich had endured a few delays and there was even an unannounced stop that had a whole lot of people exiting the train and jumping on a different train.  The announcements were all in German, and so I could only catch the overall concept of the message, and struggled with some of the less common words.  I could tell from the reactions of may of the grumpy train passengers that we were in for a bit of a delay.  Many others opted to jump to a different train.  I decided to ride out the delay, because we definitely weren't being told that we had to exit the train and there were still a number of passengers patiently waiting onboard for the train and after about 30-45 minutes, the train was moving onward again.  The walk from the train station to the hotel was a bit of a distance, but not too bad because most of the walk was on a pedestrian mall with no traffic. I would guess the walk was less than two miles or so, but it was a fun walk to check out the city and see the sights along the way. The Hotel Isartor would be home for the next 2 nights, both of which were included with the tour. This room had a nice  view of city life in Munich. In the photo below, I'm reaching out of the window in the hotel room and greeting Munich. The Best of Munich, Salzburg and Vienna  tour would be starting in a couple of  hours, so there was time to visit the Christmas market just down the street before the official orientation meeting to start the tour.  Day 1: The tour started at 4:00 pm with a welcome meeting and some local novelties gifted to us by Barbara, our tour guide. We then went on a brief city tour and headed to dinner with the group (see picture above) to wrap up the evening. Day 2: The only full day in Munich. Day 3: Our last day in Munich as we headed to Austria and the city of Salzburg.

The daily tour agenda was posted in each hotel lobby throughout the tour to keep us informed of the events for that day.  Posted in the hotel upon arrival in Munich, there was a nice bonus posting that  included some sightseeing suggestions for those that arrived  before the tour began along with some practical advice as well.  Posting these suggestions was courtesy of our tour guide, Barbara. More on her below.

At the welcome meeting on Day 1, we meet our guide Barbara Schikofsky and her apprentice, Chiara Baroni. Barbara was a great guide to have with us for the whole 8 days from start to finish. Before the tour had even started, she provided sightseeing ideas and covered some practicalities by posting a note in the hotel lobby. At the welcome meeting, she thoughtfully brought along some local Germany novelty items for everyone on the tour.  These items included cookies, chocolates, and even local facial tissues! As she introduced herself to the group, you knew one thing was for sure, she was going to have fun and we were along for the ride.  She even surprised me on my birthday! Barbara presented me with a very thoughtful gift described below.

In this picture (right) she is seen with our fantastic local guide in Munich, Michael Borio.

My birthday happened to fall on a date during the tour, so Barbara made sure to get a gift for me to help me celebrate.  This hand drawn artist's rendition of Salzburg that she picked up  while we were in Salzburg was the perfect gift.  Thank you, Barbara!

Hallo München (Hello Munich)

Day 1 - Orientation and welcome meeting - brief city tour and group dinner at Burg Pappenheim

Strange but true

Once checked-in at the hotel, I couldn't help but notice the shop right across the street from the hotel room has a bag above the door that almost matches exactly the little bag I used to store charging cables. I had to prop the bag up on the window sill and take a picture with the shop in the background.

Christmas everywhere

There are Christmas decorations everywhere in Munich, including our hotel.

Public transportation

Barbara gives us a brief rundown on how to use public transporation in Munich and then gives all of us our transportation passes that we will use to explore the city.

Our first dinner with the group

An enjoyable dinner in a small restaurant - Burg Pappenheim - which serves traditional German foods, including Schweinebraten and Krautkasespetzle

Wunderbares München (Marvelous Munich)

Day 2 - Walking tour of Munich - lunch at Bratwurst Glockl - afternoon/evening on your own
